A woman who underwent the world's first heart-liver-kidney transplant was placed back on a ventilator after developing inflammation of her pancreas.

Cindy Martin, 26, of Archbald, remained in critical condition early Tuesday at Presbyterian-University Hospital. Her condition had been listed as serious during the weekend, before the inflammation developed.

The pancreas is a gland that secretes a digestive juice into the small intestine. Doctors believe the inflammation is related to the Dec. 3 transplant operation, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Rossi said. Doctors said Martin's transplanted organs were functioning well, however.
