Morrison Knudsen Corp. is one of three companies left in the final bidding for $1 billion in construction on the $6 billion superconducting supercollider.

MK-Ferguson Co., the MK subsidiary which has been pursuing the contract for four years, learned last week it had made the short list, said Peter Miller, vice president for the Cleveland-based company."I believe it would be one of the company's largest contracts," said Miller.

MK-Ferguson is competing with two other construction giants, Bechtel Group, Inc., San Francisco and Fluor Corp, Irvine, Calif.

Even if MK-Ferguson gets the contract, Congress has only appropriated $225 million for the project.
