Utah Valley Community College is offering two new courses that will be taught on the state educational network, Channel 9, beginning Jan. 4.

"Television courses, also called distance learning, are becoming very popular because of the convenience they offer students," said Roger Porter, director of concurrent enrollment."Although course requirements are the same as on-campus classes, students have the advantage of recording courses on television and reviewing the lectures for tests, or viewing them at a time more convenient to their schedules," he said.

The television courses offered by UVCC include "Introduction to Mass Communications," taught by Elaine Englehardt, Utah's professor of the year, and "Common Medicines," taught by Glen Hanson, a professor at the University of Utah.

Porter said some cable systems don't offer Channel 9. He said students interested in the college's television courses should make sure they have access to a television that picks up the channel.
