The team of Tammie Green and Don Bies shot a best-ball score of 11-under-par 61 Friday and took a two-shot lead after the first round of the Mazda Champions tournament.

Green and Bies combined for 11 birdies, seven by Bies and four by Green, over the par-72 Hyatt Dorado Beach East course."We played very consistent golf," Green said.

"We missed some short putts, but we stroked everything well that we missed," Bies said. "It was just a good round of golf for both of us."

Three teams were tied for second at 9-under 63. They included Nancy Lopez and Al Geiberger, Orville Moody and Beth Daniel, and Sherri Turner and Charles Coody.

The Lopez-Geiberger duo had 10 birdies and one bogey, with both players three-putting the final hole. Turner and Coody had nine birdies, including six by Turner. Daniel and Moody also had nine birdies, five by Daniel.

Dave Hill, who teamed with Colleen Walker to win last year, combined with Pat Bradley for a 66, five strokes back and tied for 10th in the 12-team field. Walker, playing with Chi Chi Rodriguez, opened with a 65.

Last year, Hill and Walker set the course record with a 30-under 186.

The field includes the top 12 qualifiers on both the men's Senior Tour and the LPGA Tour, competing for a first prize of $500,000.
