A young vandal who didn't "want to be a grinch" says he's sorry for destroying Santa's sleigh and other Christmas decorations that an elderly homeowner displayed on his front lawn.

"I'm writing you to say that me and my three friends are very sorry for destroying your sled and reindeers," said the letter sent to John Brilliant, 65, whose annual yuletide display attracts admirers from throughout the city. The vandals struck the night of Dec. 8, tipping over a statue of Santa and his sleigh and scattered some stuffed animals that were part of the display. But they did their worst damage to the hand-painted, Masonite reindeer.

The vandals ripped off the heads and antlers and broke their legs in several places so there would be no chance of repairing them.
