An energetic and devoted Church leader, President Spencer W. Kimball lived a life filled with service and significance. Following are some of the highlights of his life:

1895 - Born March 28, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the sixth of 11 children of Andrew and Olive Woolley Kimball.1898 - Moved with family to Thatcher, Ariz., at age 3.

1914 - Graduated with honors as class president from Gila Academy; called to Central States Mission.

1917 - Married Camilla Eyring on Nov. 16.

1924 - Called to stake presidency in St. Joseph (Ariz.) Stake.

1938 - Called as president of Mt. Graham Stake after St. Joseph Stake was divided.

1943 - Was ordained an apostle Oct. 7 by President Heber J. Grant.

1957 - Underwent throat surgery to remove one malignant vocal cord and part of another.

1970 - Became acting president of the Council of the Twelve after death of President David O. McKay.

1972 - Had open heart surgery in April, became president of the Council of the Twelve in July after the death of President Joseph Fielding Smith.

1973 - Ordained and set apart as president of the Church on Dec. 30, after the death of President Harold B. Lee.

1974 - Sustained April 6 as president of the Church; issued famous "Lengthen Your Stride" address to regional representatives two days earlier.

1979 - Underwent two operations, one on Sept. 9, the other Nov. 17, for subdural hematoma.

1980 - Was given worldwide birthday party on his 85th birthday, and an evening of tribute attended by national figures on March 27-28.

1981 - Underwent third operation Sept. 5 for subdural hemotama.

1982 - Celebrated 65 years of marriage with wife, Camilla, in quiet reception on Nov. 16.

1985 - Observed 90th birthday March 28, greeting nearly all 65 General Authorities at a reception. Asked, "Isn't it great being 90 years old?" he responded, "One hundred years of service would be better." On Nov. 5, he died at age 90.
