President Corazon Aquino Wednesday signed into law a bill granting her emergency powers for six months to deal with the economic crisis caused by the recent failed coup attempt.

"I shall exercise these powers decisively to carry out their end of protecting our people and reconstruct our economic gains," Aquino said. The National Emergency Powers Act was approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives Tuesday night after differences in their respective bills were reconciled.

The new law authorizes Aquino to prevent hoarding and price manipulation, import essential commodities, conserve energy and stagger working hours.
