A 73-year-old Lindon man has been given a suspended prison term of zero to five years and placed on probation for three years, following his guilty plea to attempted sexual abuse of a child.

As terms of probation, 4th District Judge Ray M. Harding ordered the defendant, Willard M. Johnson, to serve 30 days in jail with time off for outpatient sexual-abuse therapy. In addition, Harding ordered Johnson not to have any unsupervised contact with any females younger than 18, fined him $1,250 and ordered him to pay $584 in restitution, as well as for counseling needed by his victims.Johnson originally was charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony. The charged was amended to attempted child sexual abuse, a third-degree felony.

Deputy Utah County Attorney Sherry Regan said her office had no choice but to reduce the charge because only one of two victims was able to testify against the defendant.

The charge stems from a June 20 incident involving Johnson and two 10-year-old girls.
