A few times a year a photojournalist feels the rush of excitement while delivering what he feels is a "great" photo to an editor.

Usually the photographer will throw in a few complimentary adjectives, describing the photo as "great" or "fantastic" in hopes of getting it used a colunm or so larger for extra impact. But it is only the test of time and looking back at hundreds of photos taken through which we can really appreciate what photos might be great. Each of the eight Deseret News photographers have picked out a personal favorite from the past 10 years.

Some photos are once-in-a-lifetime moments captured on film, such as Garry Bryant's of a parachutist ripping through another chute in midair. Other photos, such as Wally Kasteler's early morning shot of a sea of fog surrounding the State Capitol and LDS Church Office Building remind us of a quiet moment worth preserving; several others are simply a humorous slice of life recorded on film for us to look back at and smile.
