Dr. Robert H. Lamb, an orthopedic surgeon at HCA St. Mark's Hospital, recently was presented an award from Howmedica Inc., a leading manufacturer of hip prosthesis.
The award is presented annually to an individual who has made the most significant contribution to orthopedics during the year.Lamb has been a key figure in the modification of a total hip prosthesis, which is gaining national attention because of its potential benefit to patients requiring a total hip replacement.
Known as the `St. Mark's Hospital Modified Mid Stem,' the modification has reduced the difficulty of obtaining a precise fit for the component, thereby allowing for greater usage by a broader spectrum of orthopedic surgeons on a broader range of patients.
For more than 50 years, Howmedica, Rutherford, N.J., has worked with the orthopedic community to identify and solve problems through advanced technology and design.
In 1991, Howmedica will award St. Mark's a grant in Lamb's name.
