SHARE MARIE S. SHIELDS DIES, EXPERT ROSE GARDENER

Marie Scobee Shields, known as "Mrs. Rose" for her interest and expertise in rose gardening, died Dec. 21 in Salt Lake City. She was 98.

A director, consulting rosarian and certified judge for the American Rose Society and Utah Rose Society, Mrs. Shields traveled throughout the United States in the interest of roses and rose growing. She was a past president of the Associated Garden Club and one of the founders and chairpersons of the Municipal Rose Garden at Holy Cross Hospital and Rose Garden at Sugarhouse Park.Mrs. Shields was named to the Salt Lake Council of Women's Hall of Fame in 1963.

She was married to the late Dr. Claude Lester Shields and was active in the Utah Medical Auxiliary.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Congregational Church, 2150 Foothill Dr. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The New Holy Cross Rose Garden or the Salt Lake Municipal Rose Garden.
