At least 120 people fanned out in Logan Canyon at dawn Saturday, but by late afternoon they had failed to find any trace of a 24-year-old cross-country skier missing for a week in the back country.

Mark Miller of River Heights left home at noon on Nov. 25 to ski the Tony Grove area and failed to return. By the time a search was launched the following day, the first storm of the season had dumped up to 4 feet of snow and several avalanches had occurred in that part of the canyon.Cache County Sheriff Sid Groll said deputies, a rescue squad, the Beaver Mountain Ski Patrol, state park and U.S Forest Service personnel and volunteers concentrated on snow chutes that Miller was known to have preferred.

Groll said friends who saw Miller, a veteran outdoorsman, the day he left said he was dressed for cold weather and carried a pack with water, food and a fire source.
