To the editor:

Something right is happening in our education system in Orem.I have been serving on the Arthur Watkins Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award Committee for the Provo/Orem Chamber of Commerce for the past several years. One of the honors that is awarded each year is the Student of the Year Award chosen from Mountain View and Orem high schools. It has been my privilege to review the resumes of the students that have been nominated by their principals and/or counselors.

Each year I continue to be impressed by the quality of the accomplishments of some of the students in our high schools. It makes it very difficult for our committee to select the outstanding student, as all of these nominees are not just high achievers academically, but are also successful in many other activities such as sports, music, clubs in school, as well as maintaining high activity in their churches.

I would like to personally thank all of our educators for the devotion they give to educate our youth, as well as to their parents and church leaders for the positive influence they are providing to them. The young people of our community are the greatest resource that we have, and from what I can see we have an abundance in quality of that resource.

I would like to make special mention of the young men and women that were nominated for this award. Though they did not receive the honor, they were very qualified to have received it. They are: John Weston, David Walton, Lise Crawford, Sarah Moody, Jennifer Sokolowsky, Edward Carter and Kimberly Asay.
