The University of Utah Computer Science Department has received a $150,000 cash gift from Hewlett-Packard Co., a leading manufacturer of scientific instruments and equipment.
The gift is part of the company's Strategic Grants Program.Along with previous awards of more than $700,000 in advanced computing equipment and $100,000 in cash, Hewlett-Packard has given the U. nearly $1 million in research support during the past year.
Robert Kessler, associate professor of computer science, says the company's grants are helping the U. emerge as a major center in computer software systems research and development.
The company awarded $5 million in work stations in 1986 to develop artificial intelligence technology.
