SHARE BOARD DENIES PAROLE FOR 1977 MURDERER

The state Board of Pardons denied parole for convicted murderer Douglas Yoakam, 40, and set rehearing for September 1999.

Yoakam didn't attend his Friday hearing. By his choice, he is serving his life sentence in Ohio for the shooting death of an elderly man 12 years ago in Mill Creek Canyon. In the spring of 1977, Yoakam attacked a woman jogger in the canyon. During the struggle, 67-year-old Justin Tauffer was driving up the canyon and heard the woman's screams. Tauffer stopped and ran to the scene, allowing the woman to break free.

But before the pair could flee, Yoakam fired 12 rounds from a machine gun, killing Tauffer and seriously wounding the woman, Karen Roberson, who managed to take down the number of the license plate on Yoakam's car as he sped away. Yoakam was arrested two hours later by deputy sheriffs. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, while charges of attempted murder of Roberson were dropped.
