Virginia and Santa Clara played to a 1-1 tie after one hour of overtime Sunday, causing the first shared NCAA soccer championship in 21 years.

Drew Fallon scored for Virginia at 26:48 off Lyle Yorks' corner kick but Jeff Beicher tied it for Santa Clara with 6:23 left, beating Tony Meola, the goalkeeper for Virginia and the U.S. national team.

The only other time ther were NCAA co-champions in soccer was in 1968. The final between Maryland and Michigan State that year was abandoned in overtime when the field became unplayable.
