Total sales of organic crops in California in 1988 reached $100 million, double that of the previous year, according to the September-October issue of Harrowsmith magazine.

According to Harrowsmith, produce buyers for major supermarket chains in the United States are now looking to suppliers for more organically grown foods in order to keep up with the growing market of health-conscious consumers. The magazine examines how conventional farmers are making the transition to sustainable agriculture, how organic foods are certified, and whether some small farmers, pioneers of the organic movement, are being squeezed out.
