Seven Utah figure skaters have advanced to the 1990 Pacific Coast Skating Championships, one of three sectional finals, to be held Jan. 9-13 in San Diego. Qualifiers from the sectionals return to Salt Lake City Feb. 4-11 for the 1990 U.S. Figure Skating Nationals.
Heading to San Diego next month after qualifying at the Central Pacific Regional in Belmont, Calif., last weekend are junior ladies Shannon Smith (second overall) and Heather Sniteman (third overall) of Utah Figure Skating Club, and novice men Clay Sniteman (first figures, third freestyle, UFSC), Eddie Gornik (third figures, second freestyle, Cottonwood Heights Figure Skating Club) and Kevin Garrett (fifth figures, second freestyle, UFSC).Also qualifying is Utah resident Amy Smith, first figures and first freestyle in novice ladies. She represents to Lakewood Winter Club of Tacoma, Wash.
Bountiful's Holly Cook, fourth nationally in senior ladies in 1988, was not required to compete in the regional, automatically advancing to the sectional meet.
The top four placers in all senior and junior events and novice singles events advance to the Salt Lake City nationals.
