Two Brigham Young University students will be Utah's nominees competing in regional finals Saturday for Rhodes scholarships.

Erik G. Davis, 23, Provo, a son of Gerold N. and Norma S. Davis, and Rebecca Thomas, 21, Orem, a daughter of David A. and Paula R. Thomas, will represent Utah in the district competition in Los Angeles.Up to 15 nominees from California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Hawaii will compete for four Rhodes scholarships. Recipients will study for two to three years at Oxford University in Great Britain.

Names of the Rhodes scholars will be announced Sunday.

Davis, a senior majoring in humanities-English, was offered a Benson scholarship to BYU in 1984 but went instead to Stanford University for one year. He then served a Haiti-Port-au-Prince mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1987, he returned to BYU, where he has been attending on a humanities scholarship.

Thomas was admitted to BYU's graduate program in English literature this fall and is an English teaching assistant. In August, she graduated from the University of Utah, where she majored in English and French. She now performs with the BYU Theatre of Ballet and will be the lead dancer in the theatre's upcoming production of "Giselle."
