A man who escaped from the Provo City Jail Saturday after overpowering and beating a jailer was apprehended Tuesday night in Holladay by U.S. marshals.
Michael E. Preston, 27, Seattle, was arrested without incident in an apartment complex at 10:15 p.m.U.S. deputy marshals had been watching several of Preston's acquaintances in the Salt Lake area since his escape. A tip led them to the Holladay complex. Deputies Rick Lovelace and Les Moe made the arrest with assistance from the Salt Lake County sheriff's office.
Preston is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail on a federal parole-violation charge. He has an extensive criminal history, including a conviction in Salt Lake City in 1987 for forgery.
Preston had been arrested Friday night by Provo police on a King County, Wash., warrant llsting three charges of rape and was booked into the Provo jail.
