Lane White's victory in the pole vault Saturday gave Brigham Young its second individual title in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet at the University of Nebraska.
White won the pole vault with a best height of 17 feet, 3 3/4 inches. Gene Brooks of Concordia College was second at 17 feet.It was White's best vault of the indoor season by 15 inches and qualified him for the 1989 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Per Karlsson gave BYU its other victory with a first Friday in the 35-pound weight throw. Karlsson's Bob Devaney Sports Center record throw of 64 feet, 8 1/2 inches also qualified him for nationals .
Two other Cougars finished second in their events at the Husker and also qualified for the NCAA meet. John Myles-Mills was runnerup in the 55-meter dash in 6.22 seconds and Russ Muir in the 800-meter run in 1:50.33.
In women's events, BYU distance runner Georgia Palmer led the 1,000 meter pack to finish first with a record setting time of 2:53.30.
