In the mountains of Utah, gold is found "in almost every direction, in quantities which promise the richest results to the adventurous explorer and the industrious miner," proclaimed Ge. Patrick E. Connor in 1864. Although Connor grossly overstated the case, Utah mines in 1985 recovered 135,489 troy ounces of gold valued at over $43 million.
