British screenwriter T.E.B. Clarke, whose often hilarious screenplays included the Oscar-winning script for "The Lavender Hill Mob," has died from cancer at age 81, a family death notice said Monday.

The scripts of Thomas Ernest Bennett Clarke, who died in a hospital on Saturday, played up British eccentricity and were made into films that were hugely popular around the world.
