The accounting firm Peat Marwick Main will administer a $5 million project to audit contractors with the federal Department of Energy.

About 60 percent of the work for the project will be done by the company's Salt Lake office, with offices in San Francisco, Albuquerque and Tulsa involved because of their proximity to DOE installations.Charles E. Johnson, the firm's Utah managing partner, said Salt Lake City was chosen as the administering office because of its previous experience on similar contracts with DOE.

Peat Marwick accountants will audit DOE contractors in the western United States according to government standards. "Our job is to identify areas where substantial cost savings can be made," said Milton Thackeray, the firm's partner overseeing the project.
