Sea lions that feed on steelhead trout and salmon at Seattle's Ballard Locks take a breather on a platform near the Shilshole Bay breakwater. The floating cage will be used to capture the greedy mammals, perhaps starting Wednesday, after which the animals will be transplanted to Long Beach Peninsula, Calif. "Operation Goodbye" comes after five failed attempts in about five years to stop the fish feasts. "This is our best opportunity so far," Hal Alabaster of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tuesday. The sea lions stop at the Ballard Locks as they migrate from Southern California and feast on seagoing trout headed back to native streams and rivers in western Washington to spawn.
