The Great Salt Lake is stalled again.
Two weeks ago, the lake posted its only gain in nearly a year, creeping up about half an inch from the previous fortnightly reading. But when U.S. Geological Survey hydrologists checked it again this week, the lake was still at the same elevation - 4206.5 feet above sea level."I'm not surprised," said William J. Alder, meteorologist in charge of the salt Lake office of the National Weather Service. "Even though we've had some precipitation here at the airport . . . it's all been in the frozen category, so it hasn't allowed much to go out there."
Precipitation at the airport was slightly above normal for the first half of February, he said. The official prediction is that the lake will peak after the spring runoff at 4206.75 to 4207.25 feet above sea level.
