Representatives rejected adding homelessness to the list of reasons why employment cannot be denied under the law.

The bill, by House Minority Whip Frank Pignanelli, D-Salt Lake, would have made it illegal to discriminate against those who lack financial resources or community ties needed to secure shelter.Employers are already prohibited against denying a job to anyone because of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, handicap or age if the applicant is over 40 years old. But House members raised a number of questions about employing the homeless, including how they could be contacted if they have no residence.
