Chinese and Soviet foreign ministers agreed Thursday in Beijing that progress is being made in resolving the Cambodia conflict, which has hampered Sino-Soviet efforts to end a generation of strained relations. Eduard Shevardnadze also concurred with the Chinese position that international supervision will be needed to ensure peace in Cambodia after Vietnam ends its 10-year occupation of the country. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Shevardnadze's three-hour meeting with Qian Qichen focused on Cambodia and did not touch on the main purpose of Shevardnadze's visit - setting a date for the first Sino-Soviet summit since 1959.
