A Feb. 9 preliminary hearing has been set for a Utah State Prison escapee charged with second-degree felony escape.

Ronald Allen Liptrap, 29, is accused of walking away last November from a work detail at the Utah Department of Transportation sheds in Ogden.Last Friday, an off-duty police officer spotted Liptrap, chased him through several residential yards and arrested him, authorities said.

Liptrap was booked into the Weber County Jail, where corrections officials believe he faked unconsciousness later on Friday to gain a trip to a local hospital. Doctors ordered him back to jail after determining nothing was wrong with him.

C. Robert Sanders, regional director of the Utah Department of Corrections, said officials believe Liptrap's seeming illness was a ploy devised so he could again attempt an escape.

However, Liptrap, in a call to the Standard-Examiner newspaper in Ogden, denied that he was hoping to escape from the hospital and said he hurt his ribs when police arrested him.

Sanders said Liptrap was not injured when police arrested him.

Liptrap was arraigned in 3rd Circuit Court on Tuesday.
