SATAN USES FATHERS’ TRADITIONS TO ROB MEN OF LIGHT AND TRUTH

"That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day." (D&C 50:24.)

The process of receiving light and knowledge is an important concept of the plan of salvation taught in the Doctrine and Covenants. Satan's purpose is to rob men of the light and one of the ways he does this is through tradition."And that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers." (D&C 93:39.)

Sometimes we underestimate the power of tradition in taking away the light and truth of men. It probably took very little time for Satan to realize that the deception of parents and other key individuals could lighten his load.

There was no need for Satan to start fresh in every successive generation when the deception of one or of a small group could become institutionalized or "culturalized" into an errant tradition in affecting millions.

In the Old Testament, one way he did it was through idolatry. In the New Testament, he used ancientT traditions. (See Mark 7.)

Today there are errant religious traditions.

"I have tried for a number of years to get the minds of the saints prepared to receive the things of God," wrote Joseph Smith, "but we frequently see some of them, after suffering all they have for the work of God, will fly to pieces like glass as soon as anything comes that is contrary to their traditions. . . ."
