Crime was on the decrease as carnival fever swept Brazil Tuesday, but Rio's hospitals were straining to deal with emergency cases.
Police in Rio said the number of crimes reported during carnival was down from earlier years, although final figures would not be available until after the festival ends Wednesday morning.Police in Recife in northern Brazil said celebrations were generally calm but six murders were reported. In Brasilia, police said the capital city was quiet. A total of 155 incidents from traffic accidents to fights had been reported so far.
Violent crime during carnival has been falling steadily.
