That welcome mat on the door step is not an invitation for everyone to enter. No burglars, please!

However, according to U.S. Bureau of Justice statistician Herbert Koppel, "Over a period of 20 years, almost three out of every four households will suffer a burglary, and three out of eight will suffer more than one. These alarming statistics are causing more and more homeowners to take measures to secure their homes. Many books have been written on the subject, but the Consumer Reports Books company has just come out with a new one - "Home Security." It's different from the other books in several ways:

1. It goes to criminological research for a close look at the most recent findings on burglary.

2. It describes top-of-the-line protection equipment as well as innovative, low-cost security measures for the do-it-yourselfer.

3. It helps to offset or minimize the local risk factors one cannot immediately change.

"Home Security" is a 272-page book written by Sydney C. Cooper, Anne Scott and the editors of Consumer Report Books. There are 42 illustrations and an index. It was published Jan. 31, 1989, by Consumers Union, 51 E. 42 Street, Suite 800, New York, N.Y. 10017 (212) 983-8250.

Cost of the book is $15. And that's inexpensive - compared to what it might cost you if a burglar broke into your home and ran off with your prized possessions.
