This gaping hole in the southern wall of the Centre Theatre is as far as demolition crews got before city building inspectors rushed across the street from City Hall to stop them. A backhoe worked for about 30 minutes and ripped the 30-foot-wide hole in the theater complex before city officials served the job supervisor a notice to stop the work, which was supposed to begin next week, because there were no required protective barriers in place. "Someone in our office noticed the work proceeding without barriers and called me," city building inspector Phil Babcock said. The Centre Theatre can be seen from the building inspector's City Hall office.
