Three people were evacuated from the roof of a condominium complex after a suspected arson fire caused $200,000 damage to six units, fire officials said.
Murray Fire Capt. Brent Fullmer said one suspect was in custody following the 3:21 a.m. blaze Sunday, which badly damaged the units and forced three people to flee to the three-story structure's roof, where they were rescued uninjured with a ladder truck.Investigators located seven different points of ignition after the fire was extinguished by eight units from Murray, two from Midvale and one engine and a rescue unit from Salt Lake County.
The investigation is continuing under Dean Larsen, Murray assistant fire chief.
The residents were "real lucky," Fullmer said, noting that the wooden condominium frame burned quickly when flames reached an open area in the attic above the third floor.
While some displaced residents went to the homes of friends and relatives, the local Red Cross provided assistance to four people, said Katey Bersch, a member of Red Cross' disaster action team.
The Red Cross found overnight accommodations for the victims at a Murray hotel.
