A possible gas leak at a new Salt Lake gas station has forced the owners to temporarily stop pumping gasoline.

Firefighters responded twice Monday to the Maverick gas station, approximately 1901 S. 3230 West, after receiving reports of gas in the sewer, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Gill Gilligan. The 2-month-old station previously had problems with a leaky pipe leading from a gasoline tank to a pump. A small amount of gas had also leaked into the ground water, he said. Firefighters were unable to determine Monday where the leak originated.

"They won't be pumping any more gas until they find the problem," he said, adding that the county and state health departments plan to investigate the possible leak Tuesday.

Although the smell of gas was evident in the vicinity of the pumps, Gilligan said there were no combustible levels Monday.
