Thirteen Utah students who achieved high scores in the difficult 1989 American high school mathematics examination were selected to participate in another math test.
Joining in the American Invitational Mathematics examination last month were John Jorgensen, a senior at Alta High; Darin Clay, a junior at Delta; Christopher Council, a junior at East; Jeff Anderson, a senior at Olympus; Brian Walton and Randy Reynolds, juniors at Orem; Daniel Maxwell, a senior at Skyline; Wade Powell, a senior at South Summit; Andy Evenson, a sophomore, and Robert Westover, a junior at Timpview; Clark Barrett, a senior at Waterford School; and seniors Brent Bellm and Michael Callahan, West Jordan.Among approximately 2,500 students, Bellm had the highest score on the first test in the American Invitational on Feb. 28; Barrett came in a close second. Reynolds scored highest among sophomores.
West Jordan and Orem high school students placed first and second, respectively, among Utah schools in the competition. It is coordinated by Vencil Skarda of Brigham Young University mathematics department and sponsored in the United States, Canada and 13 other foreign countries.
