Former University of Utah basketball coach Lynn Archibald was scheduled to be in Tempe, Wednesday, where he is expected to accept a position as an assistant coach at Arizona State under newly hired head coach Bill Frieder.
Archibald, who was fired in March after six years at Utah, told the Deseret News that barring unforseen problems he will take the job at ASU. "I'm real serious about going there," he said. "We'll know definitely tomorrow (Wednesday)."Archibald continued, "I think I can have the job if I want it. It's pretty well set if we can get things situated with the U. and with us." The former Utah and Idaho State coach has one year left on his contract with Utah. He said if his interview with Arizona State athletic director Charles Harris goes well Wednesday, he will have the job.
Archibald was also being considered as head coach at St. Mary's, replacing Lynn Nance, who was recently hired at Washington.
In other coaching changes, Rigby (Idaho) High coach Elliott Anderson has been hired as the new head coach at Snow College. Among the candidates for that job was former BYU assistant coach Carl Ingersoll, but he lost interest due to financial considerations. Ingersoll was told last week that he will not be retained at the Provo campus.
Meanwhile, Reid said last week that he is considering nine or 10 candidates as assistant coaches, but will not pick any until after the Wednesday signing date. Among those reportedly on Reid's list are Ute assistant Trent Johnson, San Diego State assistant Charles Bradley, part-time Cougar assistant John Hansen and Dixie College coach Ken Wagner.
