KEMX Radio (AM-1320) made a change in its programming direction and staff earlier this month.
As of April 1, the station let all of its former on-air personalities go, including its morning man (and former KSL disc jockey), Morrie Carlson. Only newsman Chris Maathuis and traffic reporter Mick Mackay remain.KEMX has also slanted its "Easy Mix" programming toward more of the big-name pop groups such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys. The station is also now playing a lot more classic music from the '60s and '70s, as well as occasional '50s music and some current hits.
The station's revised personality schedule is:
6-9 a.m. - Ray Kalusa with an all request show of oldies or current hits.
9-11 a.m. - Dean Richards.
11 a.m.-3 p.m. - John Calhoun.
3-7 p.m. - Karen Williams.
7-11 p.m. - Rocky Martini.
KEMX will still offer news and traffic updates during morning and afternoon drive time and is currently finalizing its lineup of overnight and weekend on-air personalities.
There's no word yet on where Carlson has gone.
-KMGR (FM-107.5) airs "Local Artist Corner," hosted by deejay Mike Carver, each Saturday morning from 6 until 10.
"I'm thrilled that management at `Magic 107.5' is giving me the chance to spotlight local artists," Carver said. "There are so many in our area who have exceptional talent and deserve to be heard."
Examples of local artists include Mike McLean, Afterglow, Roger Hoffman, Lex de Azevedo, Kenneth Cope and Mike Webb.
Carver is also on the air from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekdays and also spotlights local music during the noon hour of each of his weekday shows. He's been involved with local music for many years, including at KUTR.
(KMGR is making a change toward "black" music on its AM frequency (1230) and is no longer simulcasting the FM band.)
-KSL (AM-1160) has picked up "The End of the Road," a new variety radio program with Tom Bodett and Johnny B. It normally airs Saturdays at 8 p.m. (when there are no sporting event conflicts). The program promises to take radio back to the good old days.
Bodett is famous as a part-time commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and for his Motel 6 commercials. Johnny B is a piano player and composer.
- KSL will also pick up the syndicated "Larry King Show," previously being broadcast on KALL (until that station discontinued it in March), starting in May.
- The subject of tonight's "Sportscentral" (6:30) with Chris Tunis will be the Utah Jazz.
The Cincinnati Reds at San Diego Padres game airs Saturday at 7:50 p.m.
-KBER (FM-106.5) is offering free admission to the midnight showing of "Dirtiest Dozen" tonight at Cinema in Your Face (45 W. Third South). KBER personalities will be present to hand out the station's new bumper stickers.
- KBER is encouraging all students, elementary through high school, to enter its essay contest. The essay topic is opposing the use of animals for medical research. First prize is $500 with the winner to be determined on May 1. Entry forms are available at many local schools or call KBER at 322-3311.
- KBER's annual "Bearfest" will be May 6 at Lagoon and will feature continuous music, body building contest, banner display competition and slashed jeans contest.
-KKAT (FM-101.9) - The station's "Kat Crew" will be helping to ease last-minute tax blues at the West Valley Post Office, 3490 S. 44th West, Monday from 9 p.m. until midnight.
KKAT personalities Richard Cano, Chris Kramer, T.J. Evans and "Gentleman" Jim will be at the post office handing out tax forms, pens, directing traffic and providing free refreshments.
