State records were set in the longest and shortest races as Viewmont and Weber won the boys and girls team titles, respectively, at the Davis High Track and Field Invitational.
And the phenomenal freshman from Bingham High, Lynette Peterson, won all three distance races - the 1,600 meter run on Friday and the 800 and 3,200 meter events Saturday - to take the outstanding female athlete award.Viewmont's Mark Johansen led the Vikings to the team title by breaking the state record in the 3,200 Friday, then winning the 1,600 and anchoring the winning medley relay team Saturday. Johansen's time of 9:21.61 in the 3,200 bettered the record Weber High's Matt Godfrey set last year of 9:21.92. In the 1,600 he edged teammate Ryan Anderson as both runners broke 4:20 - Johansen coming from behind in the last 100 meters to win in 4:19.36 to Anderson's 4:19.77. For his efforts he was named the Top Male Athlete of the meet.
He had close competition from American Fork's Bart Jorgensen, who broke the record in the 100 meters with a clocking of 10.82, bettering the record of 10.87 by Olympus' Ron Kehl set in 1987, and also won the 200 (22.17) and anchored American Fork's 400 meter relay team to victory in 44.04.
The Vikings had 97 points to 70 for runner-up Davis. Bonneville was third with 48, followed by Weber (47), American Fork (36), East (35) and Hillcrest (35).
"They've got quality depth," Davis Coach John Flint said of the Vikings. Anderson, for example, had three second-place finishes - 1,600, 3,200 (9:28.09) and 800 (1:56.16) - in all personal best times. Ben Higbee finished second for the Vikings in the 400 (49.74) and 200 (22.67) as did teammates Steve Ballard in the high jump (6-6) and Ryan Wilson in the pole vault (13-6).
East's Matt Stowell took first in the 400 (48.89) while teammate John Schiefer won the 800 (1:55.69). Weber's Scott Hale edged Box Elder's Biff Williams in the discus, 161-5 to 161-1. Layton's Scott Brimhall won the high jump at 6-8 while Roy's Brandon Rees took the pole vault at 14-0.
Davis was led by shot-putter Justin Beard (52-7) and hurdler Bruce Stevens, who won the 110 highs in 14.40 and finished second to Weber's Greg Deitch in the 330 intermediates, Deitch clocking 39.06 to Stevens' 39.25.
The girls competition was much closer, with Weber scoring 861/2 points to 75 for Layton. Bingham was third with 62 followed by Mountain View (51) and Roy (37).
Weber only had two firsts - Cindy Burningham in the 200 and the 1,600 relay - but had a lot of second and third-place finishes. Layton's Corrie Phelts won the long jump (17-2) and finished second in the 100 (12.67) behind teammate Yolanda House (12.50) and second in the 200 (26.41).
