High school students living in north Davis County began receiving letters this week inviting them to attend Bountiful and Woods Cross high schools next August.
More than 4,000 letters were mailed to parents and students who are supposed to attend Layton and Clearfield high schools next year. The school district is inviting students to commute to the south Davis schools to help ease overcrowding at the two northern high schools, Wally Hawkins, Woods Cross principal, told the school board Tuesday.Under a policy adopted by the Davis School Board two weeks ago, students from the two schools can transfer until April 30.
"Students choosing this voluntary move during the open window period will not penalized if they wish to participate in any Utah High School-sponsored activities. That also means that they may participate in either varsity of junior varsity activities," the letter says.
After April 30, transfer students would not be able to compete in varsity activities for a full calendar year.
Hawkins said that both Bountiful and Woods Cross are telling students about strong academic and athletic programs at the schools including strong advanced placement programs. Bountiful has strong music, drama and speech programs while Woods Cross takes pride in its sports programs.
Woods Cross is also the only high school in Davis County that has a 7-period day, something some parents and students prefer. Both schools were also recently moved to a 3-A classification.
Students interested in attending Bountiful High School should call Truman Carver at 299-2062. Visits will be made by appointment.
For more information about transfers to Woods Cross High School, contact John Adams at 299-2075. An open house will be held at the school on Tuesday, April 11, and Tuesday, April 18, at 7 p.m.
Counselors at Layton and Clearfield high schools can also give students information about Bountiful and Woods Cross high scools. They will also make periodic announcements at their schools, Hawkins said.
