Las Vegas authorities Friday were holding a man police want to question in connection with the slaying of a Utah man whose sawed-off legs were found in a trash can, Salt Lake County Sheriff Pete Hayward said.
Robert Eugene Bennett, also known as Roy William Anderson, 51, was arrested Thursday by Clark County deputy sheriffs, Hayward said."Bennett was arrested on a federal warrant for misuse of a social security card, and he will be brought back here by U.S. marshals next week," the sheriff said. "He applied for a job with a trucking firm in Las Vegas and used a reference here in Salt Lake, another trucking firm."
The Salt Lake trucking firm informed the Las Vegas company Bennett had been sought for questioning in the the February death of Larry Duane White.
White, 52, was reported missing by his father on Feb. 21. Legs found the following day in a trash bin behind Smith's Food King, 851 E. 45th South, are believed to be White's. The rest of his body has not yet been found.
"We have officers talking to him" to establish the relationship between the victim, a free-lance writer, and Bennett, Hayward said.
Homicide squad Lt. Ben Forbes said Bennett and White played chess together on Feb. 19. White was last seen by his elderly father the morning of Feb. 21.
"They were buddies somewhat, but what we're trying to do is determine the extent," Hayward said.
