State Board of Regents Chairman W. Eugene Hansen will resign from the board June 30 when his term as chairman ends.

Edler Hansen, who was called to the First Quorum of Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during last weekend, announced his resignation Friday and said he has mixed emotions about leaving."Last Saturday my call to serve as a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was announced. I enthusiastically welcome the challenges and responses that await me. I feel, however, that I need to discontinue other commitments in order to successfully fulfill my new duties," he said in a prepared statement.

There is already another church official, Presiding Bishop Robert D. Hales, serving as a regent.

Elder Hansen's resignation will come at the end of his fourth year of a six-year term on the board.
