A fire that began in a deep fat fryer caused $5,000 damage to a downtown bar Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were able to quickly douse the blaze at Murphy's Bar, 160 S. Main, about 1:15 p.m. "Initially, it looked like it was going to be quite serious . . . but we sent the extra help back," said Battalion Chief Jim Kleine.Firefighters thought the blaze had spread to Daynes Music Co. next door, but the blaze was confined to the bar's kitchen area.
