"The French Revolution: A Bicentennial Celebration" is the title of a special one-day symposium to be presented Saturday at the Museum of Fine Arts on the University of Utah campus.
Jointly sponsored by the museum, the Utah Endowment for the Humanities, the Utah Council for Humanities Education and the Alliance Francaise, the event will bring together scholars whose teaching and research has focused on the French Revolution and its impact on the world.In addition the Marriott Library Rare Book Department is loaning a small exhibit, to be installed in the museum's Hansen Gallery, consisting of first-edition volumes of the French Encyclopedia and other books pertinent to the symposium.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by a keynote address by Professor James R. Lehning of the history department. He will be followed by Suzanne Desan of the University of Wisconsin, who will lecture on "Religious Riots During the French Revolution."
From 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. the Alliance Francaise will host a reception in the museum galleries, after which Richard Cummings, professor of languages and literature, will discuss "French Theater and the Revolution."
Following a noon lunch break, concurrent sessions will be held in the gallery area: at 12:45 Bryon Cannon on "Descriptions de L'Egypte: A French Cultural and Scientific Monument" and Leonard Rosenband on "Popular Movements During the French Revolution, then at 2 p.m. Frank Sanguinetti on "Neo-classicism and the Revolution" and Aden Ross on "The Romantic Poets: The True Revolutionaries."
Box lunches are available, by reservation, for $6.50. Otherwise all events are free to the public, as is parking.
