Two Deseret News writers are among nine individuals and seven corporations on the Utah Education Association's "Honor Roll" this year for making significant contributions to Utah schools.

Education editor Twila Van Leer and education writer Angelyn Hutchinson are being honored at the Governor's Mansion Wednesday night for a series of articles last fall on Utah teacher morale.Other recipients of the Honor Roll Awards are:

Arbra Johnson, regional director of the State PTA, for spearheading a self-esteem festival that attracted 1,800 students.

Campbell Scientific, a Logan high-technology company that sets aside part of its profits each year to buy classroom equipment for Logan and Cache County students.

Darlene Gubler, president of the State PTA, for her leadership in the successful fight against three tax-limitation ballot initiatives.

KUTV and KSL-TV, for their editorials against the tax-cutting ballot initiatives, which would have significantly reduced education funding.

US WEST, for providing tutors to students on company time and recognizing teachers' accomplishments.

Morris Travel/Ask Mr. Foster and Northwest Intermediate School Principal Jim McCoy, for rewarding students' good scholarship with free educational travel.

Utah First Lady Colleen Bangerter and Marva Jones, president of the Utah Federation for Drug-Free Youth, for their work to halt substance abuse among Utah's youth.

Rep. Kim Burningham, R-Bountiful, for his legislative work in helping to shape many fair and constructive laws.

Mountain Fuel Supply Co., for its support of child-related programs, including the McGruff anti-crime campaign.

The late Walt Prothero, an educator who worked to improve education in Utah.
