Writer Tom Wolfe is a skillful observer of social trends, and he's not immune to them. Wolfe returned to his native Virginia over the weekend to speak at the Longwood College commencement and revealed a bit about himself. "I was raised to believe that there was a kind of moral opprobrium attached to getting heavily into debt," Wolfe said. "In about 1970, I began to hear the phrase, `You've got to leverage yourself.' Somehow the idea was presented that debt was a lever that could be used to move the world. So I did it. I got into debt up to here. And I developed a kind of hysteria about it." Presumably the money Wolfe made from "The Bonfire of the Vanities" has eased his financial hysteria.
