NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR VOTE FRAUD

A committee of the House of Representatives has approved a bill that would make election fraud easier. One provision would forbid polling officials to require a citizen to reregister even if he has allowed many years to pass without exercising his right to vote. Thus anyone who has registered just once would remain registered indefinitely.

This measure gives new opportunities to the machine politicians who have traditionally specialized in reviving the dead on Election Day. They could comb the records for citizens who have not voted for several years, then hire impostors to vote in their names. The government should encourage all eligible citizens to vote. But it can do so without issuing new invitations to steal elections.
