4-CAR ACCIDENT ON 21ST SOUTH DEMOLISHES 3 VEHICLES, LANDS 2 MEN IN AREA HOSPITALS

A four-car accident that snarled traffic and totaled three vehicles landed two people in area hospitals, Salt Lake police said Friday.

A car driven by Gilbert Friel, 83, 1949 S. Sixth East, was traveling east on 21st South at Third West when it rear-ended another car, which set off a domino effect and hit two others, officers said.A small pickup driven by Tolby J. Guerrero, 48, then collided into the back of a car driven by Richard H. Kimball, 45, both of Salt Lake City, said officer J.R. Nelson.

Kimball's vehicle then rear-ended a van driven by Russell Strang, 19, of West Valley City, Nelson said. Three cars were totaled in the 3:15 p.m. accident that caused $16,000 in damage.

Friel was taken to LDS Hospital for a broken sternum. Guerrero was taken to Holy Cross Hospital for back injuries.
