CONGRESS GIVES GIS A 2ND CHANCE TO GET EDUCATION BENEFITS

Active-duty military personnel have a new opportunity to qualify for GI Bill education benefits, Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, says.

Hansen, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said those who enlisted between July 1, 1985, and June 30, 1988, have until June 30, 1989, to choose to have $1,200 withheld from their pay as their contribution to educational benefits that could total $10,800 when they attend college."After this window of opportunity passes, a service member will not have this chance again," Hansen observed.

He said some recruits had been unaware of the opportunity when it was first offered and were given a second chance by Congress.
