The Provo Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the Hershey Youth Track and Field Meet at 5 p.m. May 24 at the Provo High School track.
More than 400 9- to 14-year-old boys and girls are expected to compete. First- and second-place winners in the Provo meet will advance on to the Utah County division runoff, to be held at Spanish Fork High School. Winners there will advance to the state championships at St. George in July.Events will include the 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter run, 400-meter relay, 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, standing long jump and the softball throw.
The Hershey program has involved millions of youngsters from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It is conducted by the National Recreation and Park Association in cooperation with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and Hershey Foods Corp.
The program is designed to encourage physical fitness among youths and emphasizes participation and sportsmanship.
Those wanting to participate can do so free of charge, by registering at the Recreation Office, 287 E. First North, Provo, or at the meet from 4 to 5 p.m. For more information, call the Provo City Parks and Recreation Office at 379-6600.
